Last year, Zack Morris floated on our radar with the heartfelt exploration of self-doubt ‘Good Enough’. Now, the Nashville artist has returned with ‘Let Her Go’, another polished yet emotionally resonant single that captures the liminal space between staying in a loveless relationship out of comfort and leaving even if that means hurting someone else. This is such a delicate subject matter that this songwriter handles with his signature sincerity. Over bouncing R&B-influenced beats, Zack delivers 00s pop melodies with his warm, tender-hearted vocals. The lyrical crux of this track navigates trust, indecision and repeated mistakes in a relationship that’s long past its expiration date: “she’s back, healing all my loneliness, weekends, of going back on promises.”
This inner conflict is packaged up so beautifully in Taylor Bialy’s production, which emphasises clean percussion, shimmering synth layers and dynamic pacing. The last section of this track slips into an atmospheric breakdown in which Zack seems to find the resolution he’s so earnestly been searching for with that repeated assertion, “I’ve gotta let her go.” There are few electro-pop tracks that balance emotional honesty, a grounded perspective, catchy hooks and a mainstream appeal. With this statement of self-worth and growth, ‘Let Her Go’ feels like another significant step forward for Zack Morris.
