Hey Binoy, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us something about yourself that nobody knows?
Of course, and thank you for having me! I think the first thing that comes to mind is the fact that I don’t sing in the shower. Ironic, considering I am a singer and that’s such a common thing to do in the shower, but I always just listen to music without actually singing at all!
What influences have gone into your sound recently?
I’ve been listening to a lot of alternative pop and indie music recently, especially from artists that place a lot of focus on songwriting. HAIM’s last album, the two new Taylor Swift records, Phoebe Bridgers, and a lot of artists in that similar realm. I think as a result I’ve definitely trended towards a more mellow and dreamy soundscape instead of the outright synthpop I was making before.
What are you currently working on?
One of my goals for 2021 is to stay creative everyday. I’ve been making a lot of short instrumentals and even just fun covers, anything to help me feel like I’m constantly working on my craft. I’ve also been writing a lot of songs that feel more intricate and detailed than anything I’ve done before, which I’m very excited about.
What are your plans the year ahead?
I definitely want to use all of the little tracks and covers I’ve been making, simply because I think there is such a global appetite for creative content right now. I also want to take the songs I’ve been writing at the piano and bring them to life using sounds and genres that I haven’t fully explored yet. My writing feels like it has matured and I think their respective soundscapes will reflect that pretty soon.
Any top tips for getting through this difficult time?
I think now more than ever is a time to enjoy escapist creativity. I watch a lot of TV shows and read books about other worlds, other realities, lives different to my own. It always feels joyful and inspiring, fleeting enough to take your mind off reality without fully removing yourself from it. These works exist for us to consume and enjoy them, so I’ve really taken that challenge head-on during these difficult times without any feelings of guilt.
