Candid, produced by Doug Schadt, is the most recent offering from MICKY. The New York songwriter is building a catalogue of considered pop-rock tracks; with a focus on catchy melodies MICKY is sure to be one of your go-to acts as we enter 2017.
Hey, tell us a bit about yourself.
Hey hey! I’m 23 yrs old from Monterey, California. I traveled a lot as a kid, went to 46 countries with my parents for their work as event planners. I moved into a Bed & Breakfast in middle school and lived there until I went to college. That kind of shaped my beginnings with music. I played piano growing up and loved to sing along to the oldies by parents would play all the time. Once I got into high school I started writing. People would host weddings or other events where I lived at the B&B and I would come home late from school or sports practice and hang out with everyone and play songs for them. Being exposed to new people daily and their stories and experiences gave me a lot of perspective and made me want to write about the things that everyone experiences.
I moved to New York in 2011 to attend NYU. While in New York I spent the first few years practicing and playing shows at random events like sorority talent shows, and bars I could sneak into. Once I turned 21 a couple years ago I started hitting the bars and clubs and playing anywhere I could regularly. In 2015 I set my goal to play 300 times in the year and I ended up doing literally nothing but playing. I ended at 408 performances for the year. That helped expand my network and started filling rooms when I’d publicized bigger shows. Since then I’ve just been writing, playing, and making music that’s true to me.
Where did the new single come from?
“Candid,” was the first song I wrote when I decided to change my stage name to “MICKY” after always going by Michael Persall. The decision for everything was to just be authentic and make what comes naturally rather than chase what I thought people wanted to hear. MICKY is a family nickname of mine and I decided I wanted to write an honest and blunt song as my first release to coincide with changing the name. Basically just wrote it about being honest and “Candid,” with eachother. All the music I listen to and that I love comes from the 60’s and 70’s, so that influenced the production.
What other content is in the pipeline?
Have a ton of songs written that I’m choosing from to record and include on an EP hopefully to release in March or April. Maybe another single before then. Also releasing a few more live session videos over the next couple of months.
What’s on the horizon for you?
I have a residency with Sofar Sounds NYC Wednesdays in January, and another residency in February every Saturday at 10pm at Rockwood Music Hall in New York. After that just more shows, releasing more music, and setting up a tour.
