‘Ocean (Reprise)’ is the dreamy new indie-R&B rework from Adria Kain

Toronto’s Adria Kain is back with another track from her upcoming When Flowers Bloom LP, which is a record that has been some years in the making. It’s suitable then that the Canadian crooner turns back to an old favourite ‘Ocean’ for this aqueous reprise version, now inhibited by the self-made pressures of who she should be, now Adria Kain just is.

On the visual side, the artist has teamed up with Ashley Iris Gill for the hallmark movie we all wish we could watch. Special nod to the pumpkin picking scene, cause that just so seasonal and cute.

The three-minute R&B track sounds like a dream series, with soundscapes constantly shifting from contemplative ballad in which Kain throws all her cards down and then into an improvised section of grumbling bass, unpredictable vocal thrills and that electric guitar really letting loose. Seeped in a aura romantic and a willingness to get lost in love, this is the soulful R&B listen for when you’re a little tipsy and really wanna text your crush.

“It’s beyond me how this song came full circle. I remember where I was in life when I first wrote it years ago. I knew it was a good song, not quite my favourite, but it had an important message that I think even went over my own head. I wrote it from a place of sadness. I wanted to create a voice for myself. One that I could run to whenever there was no one else. One that would create a platform big enough for me to exist in without boundaries, like the Ocean, because what’s bigger than that really.”
