How are you feeling right now?
“Man, I feel like I can use a haircut right about now hahah! I live in Toronto and everyone is still in lockdown, but things are looking optimistic with certain restrictions being lifted. Hopefully, everyone reading this is doing well and taking care of themselves. Other than that, I feel great with my new release ‘Don’t Slow Down’. I’m really excited for everyone to be apart of this new chapter I am on with my music. I’ve been working tirelessly with my team to bring new sounds for the fans to enjoy.”
For those who are new to Kevv, could you describe you and your sound for us?
“Personally, I feel like I embody what it means to be a new Toronto artist. Living in Toronto, you witness firsthand what Drake and The Weeknd have been able to do not only for themselves but also for the city. It gives me a lot of confidence knowing that two of the biggest artists in the world grew up in my backyard. I feel like if you’re from Toronto there is just this undeniable energy that fuels artist like me to make our own stamp in the music world. My sound is simply a composition of atmospheric melodies of trap R&B. When listening to my music it sounds very laid back, but bouncy at the same time. It’s really great for those late nights when you’re lounging and smoking that grape mint shisha. If you’re a new listener, I’m sure you will catch that vibe right away.”
What inspired you to write and release ‘Don’t Slow Down’?
“I recently moved into a new home with my family and ‘Don’t Slow Down’ was the first song I
made while we were still settling in. We recorded and mixed it in one session. I believe it was
the day after that we shot and edited the promo video while completing the artwork for the
single. A lot of my songs are just moments of my life, and Don’t Slow Down is one of those
tracks where I was caught in this “high” from my ambitions. I wanted to capture what I was
feeling and inspire others to stay motivated on their journey.”
Do you have any advice to other artists/creatives about staying focused and motivated through these particularly difficult times?
“I would say even though we’re all experiencing these difficult times together in our own unique
way, we still need to stay focused and inspired to create our art. Things that I do to stay motivated are, writing, meditating, working out, going for walks and always looking for beats. Being in lockdown, I am forced to stay proactive, and I use these times to channel my energy into my music.”
Work is obviously important but so is rest, what do you like to do in your spare time and do you have any interests outside of music?
“Currently I am a co-owner of a Vintage Clothing Company with my brother, so when I’m not making music, I’m selling clothes and building a streetwear empire. I love fashion and the history of clothing. I get inspired daily by streetwear culture, I feel like the music and fashion culture co-exists with one another. From the likes of Kanye, Pharrell, Kurt Cobain, Prince and Tupac each have played a part in my life, especially in the sense of bridging the gap between clothing and music.”
What’s been a highlight of your music career so far?
“The release of my debut EP Connect has been the highlight of my career thus far. The project itself is currently at 1.2 million streams on Spotify and is continuously growing. It just goes to show that hard work, dedication, and passion will always pay off. I’m grateful to everyone listening and vibing with me.”
Do you have any goals or milestones to tick off for you and your music, if so – what are they? (Fancy winning a Grammy one day?)
“I’m just trying to create the waviest music and of course winning Grammys and other awards are on my bucket list, but honestly what I really want to do is create timeless sounds like Bob Marley. Personally, if I can make someone’s day better when they listen to my music, then to me that is a milestone.“
What can we expect to see from Kevv over the remainder of 2021?
“A lot of music and a whole lot of surprises!”
