Chatterbox: Irene Skylakaki chats snoozing, psycho-thrillers and new project Hydra.

Hey Irene, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us something about yourself that nobody knows?

Today I woke up at 6:30, then snoozed and finally woke up at 8:00.

What influences have gone into your sound recently?

At the moment I’m writing music for a psycho-thriller theatrical play and I’ve been re-
watching Kubrick’s films for inspiration. I definitely think that these soundtracks have found
their way into my sound.

What are you currently working on?

I’m mainly working on the play mentioned above and also finalizing my next album with
producer Danton Supple, with whom we’ve formed a band called Hydra. The sound of Hydra
is dark and eerie, with an electro-acoustic atmosphere and unusual time signatures.
Hopefully, we will be releasing it in 2021 and I’m super excited to share it with the world.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

My main plan is to write as much music as I can and get into a deeper level of craft with
my songwriting now that I have all the time in the world and no excuses.

Any top tips for getting through this difficult time?

I think it’s important to remain hopeful and to be kind to ourselves. What I’ve noticed in
terms of my well-being during lockdown is that it improves drastically on the days that I’m
productive at home. Even if it’s a small addition of writing each day, it definitely makes a
difference. When I don’t feel like doing anything productive, I give myself the license to
enjoy whatever it is I want to enjoy. Our underlying stress levels due to this disruption must
be really high, so I think we could all use some soothing from time to time.
