Chatterbox: Margø chats starfish, mental health and Schitts Creek.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us something about yourself that nobody knows?

This is a tough question! I like to think that I’m a pretty open book. I don’t think many people know that I spent some time living on a marine research base and studied starfish! I took marine biology in University and spent a semester in a little fishing town on Vancouver island. It was honestly one of the best things I’ve ever done, I absolutely loved escaping from civilization for a while to live by the ocean.

What influences have gone into your sound recently?

I’ve always written my music based on feelings and emotions that I’ve experienced. Recently I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on how I’ve been feeling (and how others have been feeling) based on the state of the world, and I know that things have been far from easy for a lot of people – including me. I want to use my platform as a musician to touch on topics surrounding self-worth and mental health, and that’s definitely influenced what I’m writing my music about right now. I think that currently, more than ever, it’s so important to keep those discussions open around mental health in order to continue to destigmatize the topic. The hope that my music will connect with someone who needs it right now has definitely been a factor in influencing my decision to be more open and honest about these topics with my lyrics – I want others to know that no matter what they’re feeling, they’re never alone.

What are you currently working on?

Right now I’m in the middle of recording a couple new songs! I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with some incredibly talented producers, and I’m REALLY excited to share the music I’ve been writing with them. A lot of these new songs are different from what I’ve released in the past so I can’t wait to get them out into the world.

What are your plans for the rest of the year and for 2021?

For the rest of 2020 I’m planning to finish up recording a few new songs that I’ve been working on! I want to say that I’ll take a break but I’m always working on writing new songs, so I figure I’ll keep doing that through the holiday season. I always have ~3 songs half written at any given time, so I think my goal is to finish majority of them before the year is over! As for 2021, I’m definitely going to be releasing lots of new music throughout the year (and maybe a few music videos as well). I’m also hoping to do some more collaborations in 2021, and I am SO incredibly excited for when I’ll be able to perform live again – so fingers are crossed that concerts are back next year!

Any top tips for getting through this difficult time?

I’ve found that it’s very easy to get overwhelmed by everything happening in the world, so I’ve been trying to spend less time on social media and more time doing things that make me happy – like writing music and catching up on movies and TV series that I’ve always wanted to watch (shout out to Schitt’s Creek – what an incredible show)! I’ve found that staying connected with my friends makes me feel a lot less isolated as well – virtual games night once a week always gives me something to look forward to. My biggest advice, however, is to not be hard on yourself. We’re all human, so please don’t be afraid to reach out to the people you love when things get a little overwhelming. This is a really difficult time, and it’s completely okay to have bad days. Just remember that no matter what you’re feeling, things will get better. They always do.
