Sydney-based songwriter Matt Black has slowly been making a name for himself with brooding alt-R&B. His new single ‘Beretta’ follows on from ‘Riot’ which garnered significant critical acclaim and deserved attention from Spotify playlisters.

Tell our readers a little bit about yourself.

Hey, my name is Matt Black, I’m a singer/songwriter from Sydney, Australia.

I write a lot of break up songs, even when I don’t want too. It just kind of happens. I actually can’t remember the last time I wrote a song that wasn’t about a breakup or some kind of emotional shit. I left school at the start of year 10. I didn’t feel like I was like the other kids.

Not saying I was better or anything like that, I just felt different and I couldn’t see myself going to uni or sitting behind a desk. Something pulled me into music and I knew I had to pursue it.

How did the new single come about?

Beretta has a smoothness to it and might not feel super sad but to me it’s personal. It’s about my ex girlfriend Sarah and I wrote it about a year and a half ago, after a heavy breakup. She was the one to me and It’s about me feeling responsible for things not working. Like I literally loaded the gun and forced her to pull the trigger but at the same feeling a slight sense of betrayal.

It’s like it’s not all my fault though. You love the hell out of this person, you’ve literally been inside this person but if they decide it’s not working anymore, it’s done. You have to become strangers instantly, dead to each other like it never even existed. I actually recorded this song and the whole project on the mic she bought me for my 22nd birthday lol

Is there more content in the pipeline?

I’ve got a lot of music to drop in 17 😉

What’s on the horizon for you?

I’m planning a writing trip in LA and I just want to make great music and keep pushing myself creatively. I just want to touch people with my music.
