Chatterbox: Pierre-Stéphane chats the glass ceiling, self-production & being a visual learner

Hey Pierre-Stéphane, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us a little known fact about yourself?

Im a producer and singer songwriter from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Tell us about your EP! Why did you choose the title GLASS, and what does it symbolise to both your personal and creative lives?

I chose the title glass because I was working as a construction glazier at the time. It can also be a metaphor for a glass ceiling. A barrier in which many people face from advancing to higher positions at work despite having the necessary qualifications to do so.

You wrote and produced the entire EP yourself, so what were the biggest challenges and advantages of handling every aspect of the project?

The biggest challenge you can face when making a project yourself is that it’s easy to overthink things and get stuck in your head. The greatest advantage you have when producing an EP yourself is that it gets to come out exactly the way you imagined it.

How did you find the balance between rock and hip-hop influences without one overshadowing the other?

I think the main thing was the production. I didn’t want to use any 808s or generic trap high hats, instead I chose to use real drum sounds so that it would feel more like a band playing rather then another instrumental purchased on the web.

Aside from musical inspirations, where else captures your imagination? How does that manifest in the EP?

Im a visual learner, it’s not uncommon for me to look at a photo or a piece of architecture and come up with a melody in my head for what I see. I then take that melody and turn it into either a song or a concept for a project.

What else do you hope that listeners will take away from these songs?

I hope they’re inspired to try something different, and put themselves out there.

What’s next for the project?

I’m hoping to shoot at least one music video to complete the concept and aesthetic of the EP.
