Chatterbox: Eva James chats self-esteem, making meaningful art, and therapeutic songwriting

Hey Eva, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us a little known fact about yourself?

Thank you! Hmmm.. a little known fact… i think theres less of these lately, the more transparent I become about my life aside from music, but I think the main one would be that I live with multiple chronic illnesses, & my health journey has absolutely intertwined with my career path over the last few years, allowing for a more authentic & connected version of myself to emerge — personally & professionally.

What was the moment that inspired you to write your anthemic new single ‘You’re The Worst’?

It was a series of moments, really. I was deeply tangled in a whiplash relationship that was chipping away at my self esteem — writing this song was the first cathartic step towards reclaiming my power & rebuilding my confidence. The day I wrote it, I was scribbling down lyrics on sticky notes in between tasks at the receptionist job I had at the time and humming melody ideas into voice memos on my phone in the bathroom until I could get home to my piano, haha.

Why was it important to speak to those themes of mental health and toxic relationships directly?

Aside from being a crucial piece of my own emotional growth & journey, I think that writing as honestly as possible about the experiences I have — good, bad, ugly, painful, embarrassing — is the only way to make meaningful art, the kind of music that someone might listen to & hear themselves in it, and maybe feel just a little bit less shitty about whatever they’re currently going through in their life, because someone else has been there too.

How did working with Paula Cole shape the sound of this track?

Gosh, she worked SO much magic on this track! When I didn’t have the terminology to explain what I was hearing in my head for this song, she was hearing the same thing & had the same vision. The evolution of this song, from the very first piano demo to the final track, is so kickass and Paula’s talent as a producer really made it all come together.

Was there anything different about writing or recording ‘You’re The Worst’ compared to your other songs on Earth to Eva?

Definitely — though writing this song was very therapeutic, recording it was even more so. I was able to release something from my nervous system in the studio that night, & I remember how good it felt in that moment to allow myself to get angry and really just be IN the song and those emotions tied to it.

Who are your biggest lyrical and sonic influences when it comes to blending emotional rawness and poetic phrasing?

That’s a great question — I actually have a wall in my little studio room at home covered in photos of artists I admire (Halsey, Gracie Abrams, Paula Cole, Yungblud, Joni Mitchell, to name a few). They’re up there because something about their artistry, their writing, or the way they’ve shaped their careers really resonates with me. It’s a visual reminder of the energy I want to bring into my own work.

What’s next for you?

Right now, I’m so excited to be gearing up for the release of my debut album, & I look forward to whatever comes next — anywhere music leads me, I’m there!
