It’s our second Christmas song of the day and hopefully it won’t be our last! Returning name Nicki Wells brings a more sombre note to the season with her tranquil, acoustic piano single ‘A Little Christmas of My Own’. It gives us a completely different image of Christmas other than the Hallmark card version that we’re often fed throughout this month. What this songwriter explores is the lonely kind of Christmas that many people experience because they don’t have a family to enjoy it with or a place to go. Wells isn’t asking for pity, instead she’s inviting anyone that relates to the message of this single to take comfort.

What really helps this message come across as empathetic is Wells’ gentle folky style. It’s a slow tempo with resonating piano keys and warm voicals. The icing on the (Christmas) cake is the music video with a serene image of Nicki Wells at the piano completely lost in the music.

“It’s a bittersweet song about Christmas because for some, it can be a lonely time, not everyone has a family to go to. But by the end there is a sweet acceptance of a quiet and calm Christmas.”
