Next on our listening rotation is ‘Never Let Me Go’, a hopeful song disguised a little indie melancholy from Brooklyn-based Swiss artist Sam Himself. This anthemic indie-pop track weaves in elements of acoustic songwriting, americana melodies, alt-rock and indie-synth danceability that makes this an incredibly engaging listen. Almost at odds with the ethereal instrumentation is Sam Himself’s understated vocals, which sound far off and reclusive – this could reflect the isolation he felt during the pandemic when he was forced to stay in Switzerland and couldn’t return to his adoptive home in the States.
One thing you can’t ignore is that his smokey baritone vocals amp up their energies to become more and more optimistic. In step, the soundscape also rises up into the vibrant chorus. In the music video you can also see the artist dancing around with joy against the stark backdrop of Iceland, where he travelled to to film this very cinematic visual.
‘Never Let Me Go’ is set to feature on Sam Himself’s upcoming second album, so watch this space!
“The last couple of years took their toll on me like they did on all of us, but they also gave me a lot to be thankful for. It still feels like a small miracle that anyone cared about my music while we were all going through this pretty bleak time.”
