Purple Pop: Samanta Liza, Elaskia, Bryde, Jenny Kern, Cassie Marin, Jodi Valentin, & Isabel Dumaa

In the ancient world, purple was originally the colour reserved for the imperial families of Rome, Persia and Egypt and while it’s no longer elitist, there’s still something special to be had to the red-meets-blue hue. Our Purple Pop selection showcases the most luxurious, beautiful and unmissable pop music finds for our ears to yours.

Leading the troupe of pop warriors this week is Samanta Liza, the Brooklyn-based musician, DJ and producer, who recently released ‘I Don’t Regret You’. This entrancing alt-pop record brings in elements of indie-dance with those spectral rhythms and dream-pop with those reverbed guitar notes. Over it all, Liza’s breathy voice whispers her truth, seemingly lost in the tranquil flow of the music.

With a title like ‘Love is’, you can’t help but to expect something sweet and meaningful, and that’s exactly what singer-songwriter Elaskia delivers. Her only companion throughout the song is a resonant piano which perfectly compliments her subtly raspy pop vocal. It’s an introspective and heart-wrenching ballad.

The always good Kentish talent Bryde is back with ‘Epilogue’, which is from the artist’s upcoming album Still, a record that will explore different kinds of love. This delightfully americana-tinged and guitar-led pop ballad is all about loving someone despite their flaws, disheveled appearance, annoying habits, because it really is more than skin deep.

‘I Should Lose You’ is the newest single from the Brooklyn-based Canadian artist Jenny Kern’s upcoming EP. It’s steeped in dramatic synth-rock akin to The 1975, with plenty of indie-dance undertones that makes this an undeniably dance-worthy listen. Unlike other breakup songs (romantic or otherwise), this one celebrates the strength in cutting toxic people out of your life.

Coming in from the left with her sultry R&B-leaning pop sound is Los Angeles-based vocalist, producer and multi-instrumentalist Cassie Marin who demonstrates the dichotomy of connections with her new single ‘Gemini’. We love the combination of heart-forward, driving rhythm and the artist’s youthful soprano.

‘Why Did I Lose You’ is a tropical dance-pop track that’s been crafted to frame Jodi Valentin’s incredible vocal. The artist demonstrates so much versatility throughout the track, adding a real human element to this entirely electronic track. Not the we not also loving those island beats and dramatic synths. All together, it makes an intensely romantic and emotional listen.

At just 18-years-old, Los Angeles resident Isabel Dumaa has all the makings on the next big indie-pop star. You only need to listen to new single ‘Call My Bluff’, with its clever word play, alternative production style, and anthemic chorus, to be convinced of this. It all hinges on the lyric “I write in cursive ’cause it makes me feel smarter,” itself inspired by a hand-written essay for school as a reminder of just how young she is and how far she still has to go.
