CHATTERBOX: Toronto’s Dancehall king, Lexxicon returns to discuss ‘Back To You’, his upcoming album & future plans

First introduced to Purple Melon readers last month with the release of his energetic and saucy single, ‘Power Over Me’, emerging Dancehall and Afro-fusion aficionado, Lexxicon returns to chat to us about his newest single, ‘Back To You’ ft Desiire.

Hey Lexicon, thanks so much for agreeing to join us, could you tell us something about yourself that nobody knows?

I don’t think there is anything that not at least one somebody knows. I’m pretty open for the most part with close friends so there isn’t anything that nobody in the world doesn’t know.

You recently released ‘Back To You’ ft Desiire, what was the collaboration process like and when did your first discover each other’s music?

The process was really easy. I reached out to him about doing a collab months before and when I found the right song I sent it over and he loved it and added his verse. I first discovered his music at his concert a few years ago and he did such an amazing job, I actually got to interview him for that concert while I was doing a journalism workshop. It was a fun experience as I’ve been a fan of him ever since.

This track continues the story you first introduced fans to in ‘Power Over Me’, which also happens to tie into the wider plot of your forthcoming album, Tropicon Islands. What was the inspiration behind the stories in the album?

The inspiration was a bit from real-life experience and my love of fantasy and creating stories. I also love watching tv show dramas and such so all of that together helped me shape the story for the album. I like to think of the album as a soundtrack to a Tv show that would be like Love Island Meets Empire.

Tropicon Islands will be your third album release to date. What would you say is the biggest lesson you’ve learned since releasing your debut album?

I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned is to listen more to myself and not to other outside opinions as that’s when I create my best work. I think I learned I only need very few collaborators to make my vision come to life as with too many people I find it gets messy and clouds my vision. I think I also just learned to be more confident in my work and my artistry

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

Music is a big part of my world but I have interests in Film/TV and Event production and I have hobbies in Skiing, & Boxing!

Which artists/albums have you been enjoying recently?

I have been really enjoying music from Latto, Doja Cat, Lil Nas X, Spice, Sean Paul, Yxng Bane as well as B Young’s album.

Lastly, what can we look forward to next from Lexxicon?

You can look forward to the Book that will come with the album and more music in 2022!
