Hey Ed! Could you tell our readers something about yourself that they might not find out otherwise?
Hey Y’all! They probably don’t know that I was (and still am, sort of) a classically trained trumpet player! I started when I was 8, played in orchestras and went to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. At 20 I decided to sack the whole thing off and focus on doing my own stuff. I still love the trumpet though, and I’ve put it on every song on my upcoming EP, including this first song, I Was Wrong, and that makes me extremely happy.
What are your musical influences?
My music taste lately has been all over the place, and frankly, I like it that way. One of the unintended consequences about Spotify and streaming in general is that the importance of defining things by genre has diminished greatly, and for me at least its come down to great songs, regardless of style. That being said, Emily King continues to knock my socks off (she just released a new song and its amazing), the Punch Brothers are and have always been awesome, NAO is so good as well, and I listen to a ton of classical music but I won’t bore you with it. Also, Gabriel Kahane’s Book of Travelers has been on repeat since its release.
What do you like to do outside of your career in music?
I like yoga but I’m not all in your face about it, I like books about ancient Roman history by ancient Roman authors. I travel as much as I can, as an American in Europe I always feel like theres a never ending list of amazing and important beautiful things to see. I like drinking and arguing with my friends. I’m always on the hunt for good Mexican food in Europe, although to be honest, its all been pretty disappointing so far.
How would you describe the sound you’ve crafted for your upcoming releases?
Well I’ve spent a lot of time this past year working with other artists and producers and exploring completely new styles and sounds, and all the while teaching myself how to record and produce. Writing and working with other artists showed me so many different sides to my voice and my songwriting, and I thought that I’d take what I’ve learned and re approach being a Singer Songwriter again. I had tons of songs I’d written so I cut them down to my favourite 6, and made the whole record myself in my studio. I couldn’t be more proud of it, and I think it has a bit of everything. Fans who’ve been listening from the start will find things that remind them of the older material and the people who’ve found my music in the last few years will also find a continuation of how I’ve developed.
Where are you based, and how does your city impact your music?
I’ve moved a lot since I started my career, but currently I’ve been spending most of my time in Berlin and I have my studio there. Its an amazing city with everything you could ask for. From ancient and modern history to underground darkened sex clubs(not really my jam) and almost everything in between, this city is just endlessly entertaining and exciting. I’m from Sonoma County in Northern California originally, which I still consider to be one of the most beautiful places on earth, but in terms of its inspirational impact I always find that I need a bit of gritty, edgy, ugliness to help me think, and Berlin is certainly full of all that. When everything is already picturesque and gorgeous, what is there left for a songwriter to add?
What does ‘I Was Wrong’ draw upon thematically?
Over the past year I’ve made a lot of major changes in my life. You aren’t always 100% sure you’re making the right decision immediately before or after you make a big change and this song talks about those needling little moments of doubt.
What do fans have to look forward to over the next few months?
As I mentioned before, I put together a 6 track EP this summer that you’ll be hearing pieces of over the winter until its full release next spring! I also be announcing tour dates soon as well. Other than that I’m always writing and recording with other artists so there are a whole bunch of exciting things that will come out in the coming months so keep an eye out for them!
