Chatterbox: the South Coast songwriter Nakala talks to us about trucks, production and her upcoming project ‘GIRL’

Hey! Could you tell our readers something about yourself that they might not find out otherwise?

I love trucks. My dream car is a Ford Raptor.

What are your musical influences?

My musical influences include artists like Ne-Yo, Brian McKnight, Mac Ayres. I appreciate great songwriters and beautiful vocals.

How would you describe the sound you’ve crafted over your last few releases in the run up to the release of your new single Never Changed?

All my songs up to this point have been an extension of my life experiences. Sometimes I’m feeling mellow and I write a chilled song, sometimes I’m feeling in love and I’ll write a love song. Sometimes, like with You Don’t Know, I’ll hit the club and need a song that follows. My sound just follows my life.

Where are you based?

I’m currently based in Southsea, UK.

How does your city impact your music?

I’m new to the city, however I am now living alone and that impacts my creativity a lot! I have a lot of time to think and be in my own creative bubble.

What does You Don’t Know draw upon thematically?

You Don’t Know is about being in the club and seeing a fire girl you want to chat to but she’s just stood on her phone, with her partner. I think the beat is fire and perfect for the club AND ties in with all these Caribbean influences/vibes that I get directly from some of the guys in my team.

Did the track evolve significantly in the studio from the original demo?

The story of the track is interesting. I had made a few samples with guitar sounds, exotic percussion and vocal melodies. Brad later found the sample and a built the beat around it, I remember because he rang me up that evening saying we had a smash! I wrote to it the next day and we sat on it for a little while, then we pulled it up and finished it when Joe and Jonah were down from London.

Along with your the new release, what else do fans have to look forward to over the next few months?

The next few months are all about my new project, GIRL. I’m dropping 2 more singles, ‘Never Changed’ and ‘Oh Girl’ and then the full project drops 19th October. I haven’t had a music video to any of the tracks yet but that’s something we are looking to do in the future. I’ll be putting out some acoustic videos of the tracks on my Instagram and I’m looking to line up a London showcase for towards the end of the year.
