Hey, tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is LALKA. I’m a producer, songwriter, musician and vocalist. I trained as a classical musician but now I create electronic music. I got bored playing the music of written by composers I didn’t really connect with and needed an outlet to express myself more directly. I take fierce pride that I write and produce my own material – it’s always been important to me that I create music that is an honest representation of who I am as an artist. I had to leave the classical music world because I just lost passion for the music, so when it came to my own project, it’s super important to me that I create music that satisfies my creative aspirations.
Where did the new single come from?
I started writing it on the day US President Donald Trump halted all refugee intake into the US and announced the travel ban from 7 Muslim-majority nations. As a person of colour and an immigrant, the news saddened and angered me. It frustrated me to hear people say “I’m not racist but…” and it made me realise that a lot of the discrimination against minorities stems from fear. That’s where the lyrics “You say you love me / I think you’re lying / I make you feel uncomfortable” come from. The song also has an attitude of defiance and subversiveness – I tried to bring that attitude out with the challenging words “Dare You To Love Me” and aggressive production-style. It’s a song that combines melancholy with a renegade attitude.
Is there more content in the pipeline?
Definitely. Besides finishing songs, I am also working on the visuals for upcoming releases. I direct and edit my own music videos and curate all the accompanying visuals – I love using visuals as another vehicle to express the sentiments behind music I create.
What’s on the horizon for you?
I’ll be appearing as a guest vocalist for an incredible musician (I can’t say who) who is touring Australia in September – I’m really looking forward to those shows. I’m also super keen to perform all the new material I’ve been working on for my own shows soon!
The second LALKA single will be out very soon, and I begin filming the music video for it in a couple of weeks. I’m starting to form ideas about the third music video even as I finish production on more music. Needless to say, my brain is pretty full right now!
