Chatterbox: Deepsleeper

Hey, tell us a bit about yourself.

I am an multi-instrumentalist songwriter/producer based in my native Los Angeles. After playing and touring the world all but nonstop with innumerable artists, (Atlas Genius, Stanaj, Rooney, Hayley Kiyoko, Phoebe Ryan, Zella Day, Steady Holiday, Hunter Hunted, Lenka, Cayucas, 070 Shake, etc.) for the past 6 years, Straus now finds himself in a space of necessary creative catharsis, with deepsleeper being the outlet.

Where did the new single come from?

The song YEARS hit me in the midnight hour on my birthday just a few months back. I was going through serious growing pains while attempting to come to terms with some harsh realities I had run away from while being on tour all last year. The piece is musically reflective of the sentiment in which it was inspired; elements subtly change in our life, and if we don’t pay attention to them they we can wake up one day and not know who we are. YEARS is one giant easter egg hunt, with many musical elements festering just beneath the surface of the mix, you aren’t even sure if they are there.

I was fortunate enough to call on some dear friends to help contribute to the recording of YEARS:

  • Mike Richardson on Trombones
  • Steady Holiday on Violins
  • Blake Estrada on Upright Bass
  • Percussion by Kiel Feher

Is there more content in the pipeline?

Yes there is. I have several more tracks prepping for release, as well as an arrangement of Years for Solo Piano I intend to put out in the near future.

What’s on the horizon for you?

I plan to continue writing and collaborating with deepsleeper all the while writing, producing, and arranging professionally in my beloved Los Angeles.
