Hey, tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello, I’m BATTS aka Tanya Batt, I live in ole Melbourne town but am originally from the UK. I’m a huge space fanatic and my favourite planet is Saturn. I grew up watching my dad sing and perform and still to this day he is one of my favourite performers, he taught me about stage presence and was a huge reason why I got into this, also his singing partner Denise made me want to sing too. I was tone-deaf as a child and started out as an actress. I’m a huge Michael Jackson fan and find most of my love of music in sad folk and old soul. I’m a sucker for sad songs that make my heart hurt but also love bands like Temples and The Ramones I can dance around my room to.
Where did the new single come from?
I was sitting at home and my partner had gone away on tour again and it had been a busy time of year for touring and I was just a bit down and missed having some quality time together I guess. I picked up the guitar and it just kind of came out very quickly. The rest of the track came together when I took it to rehearsal with my live band members Hayden Calnin, Lachlan O’Kane and Ross Beaton. I’m very lucky to have some of the most inspiring and most talented musicians I’ve ever come across, My goal was to create a song that sonically made you feel like you were traveling through outer space and Ross’ modular synth work definitely helped with this feeling. It also came from the need to start being more creatively honest and releasing and working on all the things I was writing at home on my guitar.
Is there more content in the pipeline?
A lot more, I’m currently working on the debut EP which will be quite different to the previous work and more on path with For Now. It has some pretty cool concepts I’m very very excited to share with you all but can’t just yet. I also have been making my own music video for ‘For Now’ and I can’t give too much away, but I’ve been searching the archives from my favourite organisation to collect everything I need for it and it’s going to be one hell of a journey for you all I hope. I also have a few live videos coming.
What’s on the horizon for you?
Well the EP obviously, but probably another single before that and lots of live solo videos. I will be playing live a fair bit the next few months, with my residency at Some Velvet Morning on Sundays in April in Melbourne. Every week will be a different experience and then I’ll also be touring with the heartbreaking talented duo that is NYCK. I have a fair few collaborations in the works too with some artists I’m a bit blown away by being given the opportunity to work with. Other than that lots of stargazing with my new telescope and listening to sad folk music and podcasts whilst riding my bike. I also am hoping to get over to the UK and USA again either this year or early next.
