Adam Loughran turns toxic romance into high-drama pop on ‘God Save Him’

When it comes to love, lust and deeper romantic connections, the English language has a whole bunch of terminology that extends from flag colours to ghosts to cutlery. We’re all familiar with the idea of being a big spoon or a little spoon for cuddling preferences, but what about the other utensils? This idea struck us when we heard the central line of Adam Loughran’s new single ‘God Save Him’, which is “you’re the nicest knife in the room.” This seemingly oxymoronic claim warns listeners against someone who appears kind and charming when in company, but has a cutting side when you’re alone with them. It’s an insightful look into a type of toxic relationship that often slips beneath the radar.

The Irish singer-songwriter captures the manipulation and tension of this toxic relationship through his high-drama pop production. Adam’s emotionally-charged vocals lead the way through a richly textured soundscape of vintage church organs, punchy percussion and atmospheric synths. The result is an undeniably accessible and catchy pop tune that acts as a cathartic confessional, and thus Adam reclaims his personal power by laying it all out on the table… knives include. With previous singles like ‘I’ll Write a Song’ and ‘Be Okay’, ‘God Save Him’ further builds upon Adam’s heart-on-sleeve songwriting signature, which also promises to be a defining factor of his forthcoming album, Too Good at Goodbyes.
