Last year, the Kentucky-based pop artist Terra Renae burst onto our radar with two of her unmissable singles ‘Best Revenge’ and ‘Wild Again’. Now, this prolific creator is back with a more laidback flavour to her sound, as you’ll discover in her newest track ‘Slightly Faded’. Co-written with Grammy-nominated songwriter Lauren Christy and produced by Midi Jones, this is an attitude-packed blend between pop and R&B that’s a rare soundtrack for the homebodies out there, the ones who prefer kicking it back in their own space rather than hitting the clubs. Built on low-end energy hooks, strutting beats and 90s electro-pop textures, ‘Slightly Faded’ is an unprecedentedly cool and stylish track.
Throughout the whole track, Terra’s self-assured presence is the key that brings everything together. Keeping up with those chunky Max Martin-esque beats, she stamps out her bold lyrics, “I work hard, play hard.” This confident chorus also contrasts really nicely with the more reserved verses, in which Terra’s voice takes on a smokey, sensual tone, with self-possessed lines like, “who cares about the plan when I’m dancing here on my own.” There’s something so powerful about stating exactly what you want and it’s a real reflection of the determined path ahead for this rising artist.
