Edie Yvonne enters a new songwriting era with ‘Nightmare’

It’s been a few years since we last featured LA singer-songwriter Edie Yvonne, who made her mark back in 2023 with a poignant, pop-fuelled exploration of her teenage-hood. Since then, this artist has gone from strength to strength – building up a loyal audience, honing her songwriting skills and branching out into new genre territories. This evolution is strongly demonstrated in her latest single ‘Nightmare’, a quick tempo combination of rock, pop, americana and folk over two and a half minutes. Not only is this a repeat-worthy and emotionally charged listen, but it’s also representative of Edie coming into her own.

Driven by vibrant percussion and warm strings, the sonic aesthetic of ‘Nightmare’ is seemingly at odds with its hair-rising song title, yet this contrast serves to emphasise the emotional turmoil that Edie is conveying here. Lines like “I hate it when you laugh, ’cause it’s a laugh track,” captures the duality of something as innocent as laughter and how paranoia, self-doubt and insecurity can change one’s perception. This is a profoundly deep narrative that you can’t help but be drawn to. It’s clear that Edie Yvonne has grown so much as a songwriter, taking confident strides into these heavier topics and eschewing a glossy production for something that sounds more raw and immediate. As the lead single from her upcoming EP Look Me in the Eye, Edie already set the bar high with ‘Nightmare’.
