Explore the unpredictable charm of Yeija’s second release ‘Beehive’

Following on from her dream-like debut ‘Spell On You’, the unstoppable Yeija reminds us exactly why she’s already on our radar with sophomore single ‘Beehive’. Rooted in a fresh pop sensibility and indie-R&B sensuality, this track is an ambitious exploration of how the human state is unpredictable – from quick-changing moods to mysterious thought patterns. Even for the most seasoned of songwriters, this is potentially a daunting concept to tackle, yet Yeija does it with an easy grace.

‘Beehive’ starts out with a hazy production allowing space for Yeija’s dreamy vocals to languidly weave throughout this pensive soundscape. It brings to mind the brain fog, writer’s block or emotional paralysis. However, we’re pulled out of this numb sensation around a minute in with a sudden key change. The track bursts into life with a playful confidence that seems at odds with Yeija’s initial restraint, but the emotional undertones are still there beneath her more extroverted vocal melodies. Whether it’s the tender opening or the vibrant chorus, the songwriter embraces those uncomfortable feelings with an undefinable charm, a little sarcasm, and a pinch of mischief. ‘Beehive’ isn’t about finding emotional resolution, it’s about embracing the moment, no matter what your internal (or external) world throws at you. Clearly, this is a bold second statement from Yeija – a songwriter unafraid of breaking the rules.

“I wanted Beehive to feel like that moment when you stop being silently hurt and start laughing at the absurdity of it all. The first half is the fog, the weight. Then suddenly, you are sarcastic, you are a little petty, and you remember who you are, even if you are still in the midst of all of it.”
