Today, Newcastle-based indie quartet Cat Ryan shares their highly anticipated debut EP, King of the World. Building on the success of previous singles like ‘Mannerism’, this release showcases their distinct fusion of indie-rock and pop. Lead by the infectious single ‘Rex Mundi,’ which addresses social injustice through the narrative of a greyhound breaking free, the five-track record marks the band’s most complete work to date. Fronted by lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Mary-Anne Murphy, the release offers an eclectic mix of melodic innovation and thematic depth, solidifying Cat Ryan’s position in the forefront of the emerging indie music scene.
Inspired by the likes of Vampire Weekend and Hippo Campus, the EP features the band’s signature sound, characterized by robust melodies, infectious hooks, and musical experimentation. The carefully-crafted lyricism explores thought-provoking themes, adding profound dimensions to the songs against infectious indie/alt-pop backdrops. ‘King of the World’ is deeply personal, featuring some of Mary-Anne’s earliest songs written in 2017, now revisited, reworked, and recorded to reflect the true and diverse essence of Cat Ryan’s style. The EP’s highlights include the impactful ‘Rex Mundi’ and innovative tracks like ‘Speeding Too Slow’ and ‘Daydream,’ showcasing the band’s depth and versatility in sounds.
“‘King of the World’ holds a deeply personal significance as it features some of the earliest songs written by Mary-Anne back in 2017 for the project. Now, after years of evolution as an artist, these songs have been revisited, reworked, and recorded, reflecting the true and diverse essence of our style.”
