Chatterbox: Benji Lewis chats solitude, adventuring and remedies for moments of doubt

Hey Benji  Lewis, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us something about yourself that nobody knows?

Hi, of course thank you for having me :)) I think something a lot of people wouldn’t assume about me is that I’m someone who does spend a lot of time with myself. Happy to keep things very calm and chill at home. But then on the flip side whenever the mood hits – I’ll want to get out by a waterfall, go for a really long drive or roadtrip with a friend or partner, or book a flight to a country I’ve never been to. I like to feel alive and keep experiencing new things and meeting new people. It’s fun.

What influences would you say have gone into your sound recently?

Hmmm I guess it’s just the music that I’m loving and listening to at the moment. So right now I’m really loving stuff from Lizzy McAlpine, Mallrat and Rosalia. Some songs I have on repeat are hate to be lame by Lizzy McAlpine, Butterfly Blue by Mallrat and there’s a few from Rosalia who is hitting me in the feels these days, G3 N15, Hentai, Como Un G.

What are you currently working on?

Following this Floating ep that I’ve just released I have been travelling again to new places. Recently got back to LA then spent two months in South America. while moving around I have been lucky to be able to work remotely, write and record with some different people over zoom. Some nice collabs and co releases are in the works that I am excited for their release and also some demos are coming together possibly for my project as well.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

I plan to keep travelling and spending time in places I am drawn to while creating and writing when I feel I have stories to share. As these songs come together I am excited to get them out there in world. Some special songs have been coming together for sure.

Any top tips for getting through difficult times as an artist?

Moments of doubt I would say are pretty common for us artists to go through. When it comes to decisions about new work coming together or what music to release perhaps. I think it’s good, well what works for me is to step away for a little while. Go do other things, be around close family, friends, even new people and experiences. Travel, get out in nature. A walk on a nice park. Eventually clarity comes and go with it. You know what’s best for you, your career and artist project. Move forward, go with it. Keep doing your best and share your art, your stories. Expressing it all helps for sure. Putting it out there in the world. It helps me to let go and move on from things that have been.
