Purple Melon caught up with LUKA, the quirky, upcoming singer-songwriter from London by way of Leeds…
Hey, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us something about yourself that nobody knows?
Thank you for having me! Something not many people know is that I’ve been writing and recording songs since I was around 8 years old on GarageBand. My first song was one I wrote about that weird sour-sweet ‘brain licker’. It was really terrible. Luckily I’ve improved (I hope) since then.
What influences have gone into your sound recently?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver and Dodie recently, which I think has influenced the kind of sound I’m trying to achieve when recording my new songs. I’m really enjoying writing more simple, acoustic songs. I get inspiration from everywhere though, whether it’s through music, film or whatever’s going on inside my head. The theme of the song very much affects the kind of sound I want for each track.
What are you currently working on?
I’ve written lots of songs over the past year that I’m currently trying to record and make into fully realised, finished tracks. Hopefully, some of those will be released in the new year! I’m excited for everyone to hear them.
What are your plans for next year?
I’m planning on continuing getting the songs I’m currently working on, ready to release. I’m also hoping to do more gigs! Just generally more music stuff. This is the first year I’ll be out in the world doing music after finishing uni, so hoping to just start building some kind of music career for myself.
Any top tips for getting through this difficult time?
It’s really tough for everyone at the moment. I’d say the best thing people can do is just celebrate the little things. Reward yourself for getting out of bed and making yourself a cup of tea, because even those things can be difficult on a bad day. Don’t beat yourself up for not doing as much as you think you should be doing. Take each day at a time and keep going. And take lots of walks! Walks are good.
