Hailing from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Kissy Fleur is a singer, songwriter, producer, and harpist, who, after a series of fruitless collaborations with Australian producers, realised that the only way to get something done is to do it yourself. Having taught herself how to produce in her bedroom, she has just released her first single ‘Conversations With Past Lovers’, taken from her upcoming debut album Ripened Fruit.
With delicate piano melodies and subtle synth chords, Fleur’s enchanting vocal is underpinned by sombre cellos and delicate flute and harp accents, adding a sense of otherworldliness to the rich sound world. Belying the whimsical instrumentation of the track is the hard hitting reality of it’s subject matter – the yet to be released album ‘follows the story of a young girl who is sexually assaulted at the age of fifteen’.
The proximity of this release to the explosion of the #metoo campaign means that it will inevitably influence the way the album is received, however, for Kissy Fleur, it is simply a sonic flashback of how events unfolded, right down to the samples of crunching leaves and bird song throughout the album. Heart wrenching and beautifully crafted, ‘Conversations With Past Lovers’ is an absolutely essential listen.
Ripened Fruit is out on 6th April.
