Hey, tell us a bit about yourself.
Hey hey, My name is Jeremy Wendel Jones but I’m also known as J.W.J, because it looks cool. I’m a Jamaican violist, producer and music artist from Indiana, and currently living in LA. Art is my life and my future paycheck, so I take it pretty seriously. I love the idea of fusing opposites together to create new things and often do that in my songs. This also makes it hard to describe my sound, but I like to call it Indie Soul. I grew up listening to classical music and gospel, but eventually branched out to everything under the sun, Radiohead and Pharrell being a couple of my inspirations. I have no self control when it comes to avocados. Yeah.
Where did the new single come from?
Runnin’ was actually an idea I was sitting on for a while – almost two years ago. I was listening to a lot of Erykah Badu, D’angelo and this artist called NAO, at the time. They all had interesting approaches to soul music both musically and lyrically. I liked how they embraced the smooth sounds of soul but combined it with genres rough around the edges, like rock and electronic. So Runnin was my attempt at creating a soul song that gave you that smooth feeling, but excited you at the same time – and asked tough questions about love, rather than lyrics everyone expected.
Actually, the song was much slower at first. I was stuck at the chorus for a while and I didn’t know what to do. I knew it had this 80’s pop sensibility with the harmonies, but I thought it was too neo-soul for me, so took it up some clicks. I finished the verses and the bridge, and threw my friend Rohan on guitar track. It was like the song had a new personality. I’m happy for it.
Is there more content in the pipeline?
Definitely – I’ve got about 4 more songs waiting to go, but I’m waiting for the right time. Singles are cool for now because as a new artist, I want it gives people a taste of who I am, but not the whole plate. Got to have something to look forward to! Eventually, my full length project will come out this year, and that will be fun, but for now the next single and for video Runnin’ will be in August. I’m in a soul-rock project called Trackless – we’re going to be releasing some sick shit pretty soon.
What’s on the horizon for you?
For now just music! I’ve been releasing content with my project Trackless for about 4 years now, but I feel like a newbie with this solo stuff. I
love being in a band, but I’ve been hungry to have full creative control in something. Although, If being in LA has taught me one thing, it’s the importance of not pigeonholing yourself, so Trackless and J.W.J will happen together. Currently I’ve been trying to figure out a live show for J.W.J.
Have a couple shows lined up in LA – August 12th at The Lost Knight being one of them, pretty excited for that! Another thing I’m doing is seeking opportunities to collaborate with other artists as a violist, record producer and songwriter – sharing is caring. Also, visuals are important to me, so I’ve been trying to learn about that for my future singles. It’s best to try everything I guess! Eggs in many baskets.
