Hey, tell us a bit about yourself.
Helloooo. Well, I’m Jen Miller — really should have rethought that stage name thing before using my name which is probably one of the most common. Hahaha. 😉 I’m a singer/songwriter and activist from Columbus, Ohio, which is a pretty weird mix, but also somewhat superfluous. My long story, short is that I played soccer my whole life & pursued college soccer until a series of knee surgeries ruined that for me… post-surgery, I started writing on my parent’s old piano out of sheer boredom, so everything in music has been self taught. From there I got degrees in political science & psych because I thought if I could understand those two things…well, you could do just about anything. And I knew if I needed to rely on my music for $, then how could I ever truly enjoy creating it? Human stuff. Now, I live in DC/Nashville…split time between the two. And here I am writing you, Lex.
Where did the new single come from?
Honestly, I’ve got this friend who I go way back with. Age 5. She’s a real angel… one of those people who lives their life through faith in the real giving way. In college, she ended up falling in love with a girl who was her best friend — and that girl certainly loved her too, they were best friends and lovers — but in the end, the way they both so deeply felt like what they were doing was “wrong” kept them from being together. It killed me watching her (even today) sort through sexuality and love that seemingly conflicts with what she’s been taught about her religion… Just gutted me and I think it’s thematic across the LGBTQIA+ community whether you are religious or not. But…no apology necessary.
When we sampled this main synth, it was so…almost piercing & ear-catching, that I felt like it gave you the perfect offputting vibe. A sort of dissonance between the lyrics and the slide…which is a little off tempo actually. I wrote the whole record over just that sound, then produced it more & brought it to my buddy Jake (stuuupid talented producer).
Is there more content in the pipeline?
Yessir. You can expect one single from me for the next few months… I’m sittin on a nice catelogue, both tunes of my own and features as well. No set dates yet, but I’ll be sure to let you know.
What’s on the horizon for you?
Well, I’m pretty new to Nashville, so I’ve been doing a lot of songwriting for other artists down here. I want to get deep into that, because there’s so much talent for me to learn from in town. And this summer, there’s talks of jumping on a tour leg as an opener for some pretty cool folks, so standby…
