Over the span of a year and a half, Blue Capricorn and LOREN KOLE worked on their single ‘honest’, which took on new shape and meaning over those months. As a real labour of love, this track is an atmospheric blend of Latin-inspired indie-pop and avant-garde experimentation, through which the pair sensitively navigate the dying breath of a relationship that has already run its course. Backed by lush synths, delicate keys, atmospheric guitars and restrained percussion, ‘honest’ embodies just how fragile those last moments can be, where one or both people are holding on, avoiding the heart-breaking reality.

Both Blue Capricorn and LOREN KOLE bring a rare vulnerability to the song, which gives it a real conversational quality, one that’s more nuanced and self-aware than typical songs in the break-up genre. True to its title, ‘honest’ truthfully reflects how a failed relationship doesn’t always have a neat ending or easy resolution. Through the spacious production, you can sense those lingering emotions in the cinematic textures. As the third track from the when you come back, transcend me EP, ‘honest’ is a thoughtful, immersive and quietly affecting piece of collaborative chemistry.

“‘honest’ isn’t anything like what it sounded a year ago. When I met LOREN a few years ago, I knew I wanted to work with her one way or another, and when I had started working on my new EP, it only felt natural for me to invite her into my space. While we were getting to know each other, I had realized that LOREN and I shared a lot of the same interests in music; most commonly the feeling that music gave us and what we hoped to communicate through our own work.

Throughout a year and a half, it felt like this song had lived a life because it had evolved into something so pure and precious to us. The more we spent time on it, the more I realized that ‘honest’ really is nothing more than a song about vulnerability and accepting failed love. I think working with LOREN also helped me dig deeper into that certain headspace, and she had also really played a big role in finding an accessible musical ambiance that spoke to us both sonically. It was one of my biggest privileges to explore that with LOREN.”
