London-based pop innovator MADELINE. has been on a creative hiatus since 2024 and when an artist decides to make their return, a lot can be riding on that comeback track. It’s safe to say that she doesn’t disappoint with her brand new single ‘JUST LIKE JESUS’. It also provides listeners with a first taste of MADELINE.’s forthcoming EP, BODY, which represents her artistic evolution towards embracing queer identity, joy and self-acceptance with unapologetic confidence through her music.
The single opens with haunting choral harmonies, calling on MADELINE.’s upbringing in the Catholic church, before rolling into punchy and camp dance-floor beats reminiscent of Lady Gaga’s mid-00s era. This combination of pulsating synths and euphoric electronica propels the track forward to an irresistibly catchy chorus where the artist’s self-possessed vocal commands, “do it just like Jesus.” In one fell swoop, MADELINE. cleverly reclaims the power of religious symbolism to celebrate the inclusivity and unconditional love that she discovered within the LGBTQ+ community. It’s about celebrating everyone’s unique, divine-like self through this anthemic electro-pop stunner. It’s undeniably sexy, positively subversive and empowering.
““I really love the idea that just like Jesus, we, as Queer people, love everybody.
That has also always been my experience with the LGBTQ+ community in general. It was a
community that has welcomed me my whole life; long before I was open about my own
sexuality. I think it’s also poignant that the name of a person that certain demographics use to
persecute us, is used to celebrate the existence of Queer people.”
