Chatterbox: ASHRR chats reinvention, organic creation & dance-floor ready tracks

Hey ASHRR, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us a little known fact about yourselves?

Thanks for having us. It’s great to be talking to you today.

What inspired you to reinvent the album from the ground up rather than commissioning traditional remixes?

We were encouraged by our label and even prior to that we had started to do remixes of our own material before Sunshine Low came out. This was a unique opportunity to create an entire new body of work with the songs from the album and turn them into dance floor versions.

How did you approach reimagining these songs for the dancefloor without losing the emotional core of the originals?

We look for the hook of the song or lyric or groove… for example, in ‘Different Kind Of Life’, we used the hook quite a lot to create a hypnotic vibe in the middle of a dance floor jam.

The new versions draw from dub, Balearic house, cosmic disco and post-punk, so which artists, DJs or producers inspired these sounds?

We listen to so much different music and when we start making new music, influences naturally come out but we never are trying to sound like someone we love. We are always trying to sound like ASHRR no matter what. Our love of different forms and styles always culminates in an organic fashion.

It’s interesting that your second album Sunshine Low emerged from the covid-19 pandemic, so how do you think that challenging time shaped the record?

We wanted to express the feeling of being around people again in person and celebrating the ability to dance and express some hope.

Album track ‘Fizzy’ feels like a lost NYC disco-dub classic, so what’s the story behind that track’s creation?

It started with a rough demo that had some of the verse and chorus ideas but it was the epic breakdown that really helped inform the track’s direction taking it on a cosmic journey through the underground street of NYC dance parties through the summers in Ibiza.

What inspired the hypnotic, genre-blending sound and defiant lyrics of ‘No Garden’?

Our love of trip hop, classic soul and jazz definitely inspired the track musically and lyrically the idea that “i won’t let you take me down” is standing up for what you believe in in the face of adversity.

There’s a strong message of resilience throughout the record. Was that intentional, or something that emerged organically from your lives during its creation?

Everything we do comes from an organic place of creation. Each song starts with a musical idea or lyric title and then through the process of figuring out how to write and produce the song , the true form emerges and that usually gives the lyrics the intent that fits for each song. We are all very passionate about our beliefs and oftentimes resilience is a common theme.

What’s next for the project?

We just released the dance floor versions of Sunshine Low under our ASHRR Soundsystem moniker which takes the album tracks and completely reimagines them for the dance floor. We are hard at work on new music as well!
