Hey emstuu, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us a little known fact about yourself?
My pleasure, thank you for the opportunity!
I have a lot of different interests and hobby’s, one of which is comedy. I love stand-up comedy the way some people love wrestling. I recently tried it myself for the first time and ended up winning Laugh Love LIVE Comedy Gameshow in Halifax!
You recently released the intimate and electrifying single ‘Insatiable’, can you take us back to the moment the idea for this song sparked?
Before the day I wrote Insatiable I hadn’t been on a date or even desired anyone in a really long time. I got a new job serving at restaurant and on my first day I met a super hot guy who worked in the kitchen. He was singing along to Led Zeppelin on the radio and I instantly had a crush and all the desire returned to my body. I wrote the song the next day at home while I was doing the dishes.
What made dance-pop the right genre for this particular story?
Dance-pop felt like a natural, strategic genre for Insatiable. I wanted it to feel as sexy and fun and flirty as I felt the moment my libido returned. The pop production really helped the song to build the anticipation and climax into an explosive chorus that mirrors the experience.
Were there any moments in the studio where the track took an unexpected turn?
Honestly, this song felt like it wrote itself from start to finish. When I took Insatiable into the studio we already knew, based on the melody, what the structure of the song would be. We wanted the chorus to be eruptive and powerful so we kept the verses stripped down and made it sound like I’m telling a secret so we could build up to the big moment. The only change we made to the original demo was cutting out part of the second verse, but maybe one day I’ll release the extended edition!
You’ve worked with artists like Ria Mae and NIIVA, what has collaboration taught you about your own sound?
When you’re creating something from nothing it can feel a little scary letting someone else make changes or suggestions about your art. I sometimes think of song as a recipe and working with incredible artists like Ria Mae and NIIVA helped to expand my pallet as a songwriter. They added new ingredients and flavours that ultimately enhanced the song and my abilities as a creator. My sound is constantly evolving through collaboration.
The upcoming EP, Self-Esteem & Dopamine, has such a compelling title, so how does ‘Insatiable’ fit into that?
Self-Esteem & Dopamine captures a time in my life when I was severely lacking both. I went through some real trauma that lead me to write songs like Don’t Look At Me. On my road to recovery, in the pursuit of self confidence and joy, Insatiable felt like the moment when I finally started to come back. It was the first hit of dopamine I had felt in a long time and that’s how I knew I was healing.
What’s next for emstuu?
I recently went back into the studio with producer Future Dad to start the blueprints for my next record! I’ve never been more excited about a project and I can’t wait to share those songs with everyone. If everything goes smoothly the first single is due Fall 25!
