Chatterbox: Arliston talks fried chicken, catharsis, and their debut album

Hey Arliston, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us a little known fact about yourselves?

Hey, good question! A little known fact is that George is medically addicted to fried chicken. Wednesday Wings, Thursday Thighs and Fried Chicken Friday are all rebranding attempts for the band mealtimes to be dominated by Morley’s Fried Chicken. As we’re in Brixton, there’s healthy supply of chicken shops. Jack does his best to resist this, but we are often caught in a glacial war of attrition when it comes to lunchtime.

What influences have gone into your sound recently?

A big recent discovery for us has been Stephen Wilson Jr. his new album ’Son of Dad’ was incredible, and was a huge inspiration and reminder of the power of a really good lyric. I think he’s going to (deservedly) win lots of awards for that one! If you hear the next few Arliston songs been crooned in a deep-south accent, you’ll know what’s happened!

How would you describe your debut album Disappointment Machine in five words?

It’s sad but ultimately, cathartic.

What do you hope listeners will take away from your music?

Really I think what I mentioned in the answer earlier. I hope people can get some degree of catharsis out of the songs, even though they are (mostly) sad they may serve as blueprints on how to navigate sadness, or at least set an example that makes people feel a little less alone.

What’s your favourite part about being a band? And what’s the most challenging?

Writing new songs in the studio is probably the number one pleasure for us. That ‘eureka’ moment, when something is brought into existence that you’re super proud of- there’s nothing that can beat that. And then second is playing a good live show!

Do you have one piece of advice for fellow artists who are just starting out on their creative journey?

Don’t be disheartened by perceived ‘failure’. There have been so many moments in the past where I have failed to write a lyric/melody, or we haven’t got a piece of coverage we were hoping for or weren’t accepted to a festival (the list carries on for MILES), but you only need one breakthrough moment to negate everything that has come before.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

We’ll be touring the album, playing it live, and hopefully writing some new songs along the way too.
