Hey jocelvn, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us a little
known fact about yourself?
Thanks for having me! A little known fact is I used to be a huge orchestra nerd in middle school. It was like all I had. I took violin lessons as a kid and peaked when I made third-chair violin in our super competitive orchestra. Then I made a switch over to play the string bass and it was a lot of fun. I’ve since lost most of those string talents though.
What influences have gone into your sound recently?
I used to listen to a lot of alternative rock or indie music in high school, and I was definitely the kid that thought they were edgy because they listened to music that “really meant something.” In college, my whole world completely changed as I fell in love with r&b, ranging from old school to modern. So, I would like to think that my style is inspired and influenced by r&b grooves and modern r&b production but attached to the meaningful lyricism that my teenage self would appreciate.
How would you describe your new single ‘delusional’ in five words?
Smooth, fun, cathartic, and directed to the person in question: “seek help”
What do you hope listeners will take away from your music?
I hope that my songs are able to pinpoint certain feelings and stories that listeners resonate with and that my music can provide some kind of relief through that shared experience and understanding.
What’s your favourite part about being an artist? And what’s the most challenging?
My favorite part is connecting with listeners in the way I just described. I love making music that feels not only important for my own self-expression but that could potentially satisfy verbalization of what someone else is going through. The most challenging part is being independent, pursuing music alongside a full-time job, and managing all the logistical aspects of my career while still trying to continuously tap into the creative side.
Do you have one piece of advice for fellow artists who are just starting out on their
creative journey?
There are tons and tons of advice out there on how to do things and how to strategize your music to optimize your growth, etc. But I think what feels the best and therefore is the most sustainable and fulfilling way to do it is just to create music that you absolutely love. It will only feel good that way, even if you give up some sort of “optimization”. Combine that with an investment to get your music out there and you will find the right people for you.
What are your plans for the rest of the year?
I’ll be releasing a music video for “delusional” in the coming weeks which I am incredibly excited for. I’m working with some amazing talents on that (Paige Hochstatter, Brittney Quach), and it feels like the first video production I’m doing with a strong storyline in a long time. Aside from that, I have a show at The Goldfish in LA on July 26th, and I am working on finishing up a fuller-length project.
