Chatterbox: Natalie Major

Hey tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m an independent singer/songwriter originally from Chicago, now living in Los Angeles. I started songwriting when I was around ten or eleven on an old upright piano my mom bought at a garage sale. Mainly writing for me was a way to express myself in a more clever way. It was my creative way of communicating at a young age when I felt I wasn’t being heard.

I moved to NYC when I was 19 to pursue a career in music and ended up in L.A., I’ve been here for 6 years working as a singer and pursuing my songwriting.
Since then I’ve had a collaboration with Tiesto, Showtek and I sing the national anthem on NBA 2k15-16’s popular video games. I also released one of my favorite ballad’s earlier this year called “Human”.

Where did the new single come from?

I wrote “City Of Gold” years back with my friend/producer Rob Kleiner. I hadn’t been in LA for long but something about it seemed inauthentic to me. Coming from New York City, it was such an interesting change of culture. I love California lifestyle and the pace of it, but the idolization of “Hollywood” finally made more sense..and it wasn’t what it always appeared to be.

The song was created as I was describing how big of a mountain it can be to follow your dreams here, or any major city with high competition. How people pretend to be more important than they are. How it’s not a straight shot all the way up and it requires a lot of hard work, talent and the right timing.  But, I can’t think of doing anything else that would fulfill me and the constant sunshine helps a lot.

Is there more content in the pipeline?

I am always writing songs and I currently have a couple songs in my pocket that I wrote last summer with Rob Kleiner and co-writer Tyler Shamy that I would like to release.
I’m so grateful and honored to create with Rob who has worked with so many of my favorite vocalists from Sia to ZZ Ward to Andra Day. I try to keep getting back into the studio to write with those two because the sessions are effortless and pretty damn magical.

What’s on the horizon for you?

I focus a lot on trying to get TV/Film placements. I’ve always thought my music was good for a dramatic scene on a CW show. Always in the process of writing new material, finding new music to be influenced/inspired by, and enjoying my life while putting out new songs as often as I can!
