Anwai are the Swedish production duo of Amadeus Rudolfsson and Mons Lorenzen, who combine a shared passion for hazy dream-pop, warm alt-R&B and genre-melting beatwork. Their sound is undeniably expansive, yet their experimentation isn’t chaotic, rather it’s a restrained affair that indicates a clear vision. With origins going back a decade, Anwai have broken their five-year hiatus (during which time they both became fathers), with a two-for-one treat, 4ever HD. This double-sided single consists of ‘SOMETHING NEW’ and ‘FLWRS’, two soft and sultry tracks that mark the pair’s comeback in such a stylish, confident and self-assured way.
With steady percussion, noodling strings and an airy atmosphere, ‘SOMETHING NEW’ is a touching confessional of love. Through hushed and subtly autotuned vocals, the protagonist puts it all on the table, “so now I can’t remember how to breathe, won’t you take me away, ’cause I’ve been loving you with every part of me.” Complementing that first track is ‘FLWRS’, a slightly more upbeat number built on shuffling beats and swaying, summer-ready melodies. Once again, the duo are bringing the romance with the classic, yet timeless, offer of flowers for a paramour. Both sides of the single are knitted together by a lived-in warmth that Anwai carved out in their home studios, primarily using Ableton and Logic, as well as a cheeky mixing session down their local pub. 4ever HD gives us several things to celebrate: Anwai’s return, the power of enduring friendship and DIY charm.
