Built on dreamy guitars, soft synths, and Jay Moussa-Mann’s luminous vocals, ‘amy’ is a radiant and emotionally profound new single that harks back to childhood summer days spent beneath the sun with friends, fresh experiences and little worries. The UK-based songwriter took inspiration from her own formative years when she went to an international summer camp where language barriers dissolved through the joy and affinity for music. It’s something that we often take for granted, the ability we have to connect through song whether that’s the latest Latina bop, Afro-pop banger, European ballad, and yet Jay reminds us of this privilege through this intimate reflection.
‘amy’ shimmers with a grounded warmth, brought out by Jay’s self-taught production skills. This atmosphere further evokes that nostalgia of golden afternoons that felt like forever and those fleeting connections that leave a lasting impact on your very being. There’s something quietly triumphant about this song, which weaves poetic imagery with sonic precision; it mirrors not only Jay’s growing confidence as a songwriter and producer, but also that early feeling of bringing a song to life as a child. As a coming-of-age anthem, ‘amy’ captures the pure emotion of being seen for the first time and being accepted for who you are.
“I’m really proud of this song, not just because of what the story represents, but because it’s one of the first songs I’ve produced entirely on my own where I truly achieved everything I set out to. Producing has been something I’ve been learning and teaching myself for several years, and I don’t think everyone appreciates how daunting it can be for a woman to step into that role. There are so many barriers and people ready to point out your every misstep. Learning anything is hard, but doing it while being mocked or belittled is even harder. Deciding to produce my own songs for this next album was a big moment for me. ‘amy’ showed me I can hit my mark — and it will always be special because of that.”
