Fresh from touring with Anastacia and Loreen and performing to a quarter million fans, London-based singer-songwriter Casey McQuillen brings her sound back down to earth with the quietly devastating new single ‘Wedding Date’. The intimate narrative unravels like a flickering reel-to-reel film of the perfect matrimonial event; flutes of bubbling champagne, bouquets of eye-catching flowers, and a couple’s favourite cover band. Yet our protagonists aren’t the newly minted husband and wife, instead our attention is drawn to two former lovers who by forced proximity must navigate the weight of shared history. Over delicate indie-pop melodies and subtle folk influences, Casey’s evocative voice delivers aching lines like, “I know the end before we begin.”
The long shadow of a past romance is put in sharp contrast to the seemingly perfect commitment of the wedding, which further emphasises that lingering heartbreak. Although Casey’s songwriting puts the listener right in the middle of the action, almost like you’re a wedding guest watching on, this single also resonates with a universal relatability. It’s that bittersweet collision of desire and distance, of reckoning once again with the inevitability of the end, of being reminded of one’s own fragility. ‘Wedding Date’ is a vulnerable insight into matters of the heart.
