Hey Leyla Sabo, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us a little known fact about yourself?
I’d describe myself as an introvert—I can be a little awkward when meeting new people. I tend to keep to myself, and I enjoy things like billiards and chess where I don’t have to talk too much. Ironically, though, I express myself most when I’m singing. It’s like music lets me say everything I can’t say out loud.
Your new single ‘Don’t Underestimate Me’ is such a powerful anthem. What inspired you to write it?
Most of my songwriting has been emotional ballads and slower songs, but I wanted to push myself and try something more bold. Don’t Underestimate Me was written for anyone who’s ever been doubted—but for me, it came from personal experiences with friends or even family not believing I could go far. That title isn’t just a lyric—it’s a message.
The song blends soul, pop, and rock, so who were your biggest musical influences when creating this track?
There were so many artists who inspired me while writing this song—Jessie J, Whitney Houston, Daniel Seavey, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Christina Aguilera, Teddy Swims, Adele… I could go on. I admire artists who bring soul, power, and raw emotion to their music. They’ve all influenced the way I write and perform.
Was there a moment in your life where you felt underestimated? And how did you turn that into strength?
I still feel underestimated, especially when people assume I can’t achieve much because I’m only 12. But instead of letting it get to me, I use it as fuel. I keep working hard, stay focused, and prove them wrong with my actions.
What first made you fall in love with singing and performing?
To be honest, I sometimes struggle to get into the zone while rehearsing. But the moment the show starts, it’s like something switches on. The stage feels like my second home—it’s where I can fully be myself and express everything I’m feeling.
Who are some artists you dream of collaborating with someday?
I’d absolutely love to collaborate with artists like Daniel Seavey, Christina Aguilera, Daniel Caesar, or H.E.R. Their artistry and individuality really speak to me.
What’s next for Leyla Sabo?
Next for me? More live performances wherever I can find them, continuing to release original music, and putting together my first EP. I’ve written around 13 original songs so far, and the big goal is to release my debut album and perform it live at a special show by the end of the year. I’m really excited to share everything I’ve been working on.
