Darcey Hope’s ‘let you listen to me’ showcases songwriting vulnerability

With a successful journey as an artist since her debut in 2021, Darcey Hope has earned recognition from BBC Introducing, secured the self-released artist of the month title on Absolute Radio, and performed at prestigious festivals like 2000 Trees and Glastonbury Festival. Her latest single ‘let you listen to me’ continues to establish her as a rising talent in the music industry. Beginning with the comforting strumming of an acoustic guitar and subtle electric guitar lines, it’s not long before Darcey’s delicate and captivating lead vocals enter the room. It’s clear that the song immediately assumes a personal and playful identity, drawing listeners in with its poignant storytelling.

As the track progresses, it introduces elements like a warm bassline, muted drums, and well-placed guitar lines and backing vocals. These additions contribute to the song’s emotional depth, building up to a stirring middle section before gently returning to an affecting final verse. In discussing the inspiration behind the song, Darcey reveals a moment of songwriter’s block that led her to write a song about the pressure of having everything figured out at a young age. Her vulnerability and honesty in ‘let you listen to me’ make it her most intimate song to date.

“I was having an awful spell of writer’s block trying to write a new song, when I listened to Lyndsay Buckhingam’s song exploder podcast episode talking about Go Your Own Way being a stream of consciousness.  It inspired me to throw my ego out the window and write down whatever I was feeling, and I finished the song in 20 minutes. There can be such a pressure to have everything figured out when you’re still young, I wanted to write this song to say we’re all in the same boat. It’s by far my most vulnerable song yet and I’m excited for everyone to hear it.”
