Edinburgh-based comedian MC Hammersmith is smashing stereotypes and serving up his debut single ‘G.I. Joe’, just before his stint at the Edinburgh Fringe with his stand-up show Straight Outta Brompton. This release offers a glimpse into his forthcoming album Mother’s Fettuccine, slated for October 6th.
Rooted in his mixed heritage and middle-class upbringing, MC Hammersmith’s comedic prowess stems from the contrasts he effortlessly navigates. Armed with a Linguistics Master’s degree from the University of Edinburgh, he masterfully wields words, conjuring rhymes on the fly. His improvisational genius shines as he crafts humorous verses with the linguistic agility of a rap virtuoso. The fusion of his polished English accent and the rawness of hip-hop creates an arresting auditory experience.
MC Hammersmith’s unique take on rap is a blend of spontaneous flow and uproarious humor. ‘G.I. Joe’ showcases his offbeat approach—focusing on fluidity over punchlines—resulting in a rhythmic rollercoaster. The lyrics meander effortlessly, peppered with organic punchlines that sprout amid the freewheeling rhythm. ‘G.I. Joe’ isn’t just a track; it’s a journey through his lyrical narrative, where punchlines are spontaneous and rhymes unfold in real-time.
“As a comedian, I always write my raps with punchlines first, then work backwards to fill in the gaps. I wanted to take a different approach with this track and prioritise flow over punchlines. So, with ‘G.I. Joe’ there are certainly bars with punchlines, but they emerged organically as a side-effect of trying to write a track continuous flow. This is my favourite track on the entire album, as it was extremely freeing to write in this manner. The first four bars sum up the lack of premise: No pretention of realness, no premises or no limits, no thought or justification, just bars for three minutes”
