Chatterbox: UK-based songwriter Ciara Vizzard talks to us about ‘Hurricane’, shifting sounds and what’s to come

Hey Ciara, thanks for talking to us. Could you tell us something about yourself that nobody knows?

Gosh I dont know how to answer this. I guess one thing is that I used to work for a woman who is now on a reality TV show in the US. Let’s just say it was a long six weeks.

What influences have gone into your sound recently?

I have loved listening to a lot of H.E.R., Sabrina Claudio, Steffany Gretzinger, Amanda Cook, Tom Misch, and Ry X recently. I would say their sounds have all influenced me in one way or another, as I’ve come to realize that I love a dreamy, ethereal sound.

Do you feel your sound is shifting each release?

Compared to the EP I released in 2017, my sound has definitely shifted. It’s been a natural progression that has been made even easier in working with such a talented producer, Nosaapollo. I took time to explore alternative genres which then naturally lead to what you hear today.

What does your latest single Hurricane draw on in terms of subject?

The subject of Hurricane is about feeling lost and alone when you needed help the most. The initial concept came from an accident I was in last year that left me stuck at home whilst I healed for a period of time. I felt trapped and imprisoned in a way, which left me with a lot of time to think about all of those who are actually imprisoned, particularly those who are injusticely incarcerated, or anyone really who feels trapped and alone in their circumstances.

Is it part of a larger project, an EP or album?

This project is a stand alone one, but a part of a few singles I plan on releasing with the same kind of vibe. I guess you could say it’s somewhat like an EP project, but each single will remain as single projects.

Where are you based?

I am based near London.

Do you feel like your city influences your sound at all?

I definitely think the overall British sound influences my sound in various ways, from my amazingly talented friends to the well known artists in this country. The UK has some absolutely amazing artists! I wish more people knew their music.

What do fans have to look forward to over the next few months?

I am definitely planning on releasing at least one to two more singles before the end of the year.
