Hey, tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hi! My name is Tori Kurtz, I go by the artist name, Mīlan. I grew up in a suburb just outside of Cleveland, Ohio. I lived in Savannah, GA for a little over 3 years while I attended the Savannah College of Art and Design and received my BFA in Sound Design with a minor in Film & Television.
I’ve spent most of my life immersed in the world of music and, in recent years, have decided to dedicate my life to it. I call myself a music producer, but I really identify as an artist overall as I value creativity and exploration through various mediums. My incredible support system has guided me to this point, thankfully. My family is the weirdest, whackiest, most loving group around and I couldn’t do half of what I do without them. I call myself “Mīlan” for that very reason: It’s my mother’s maiden name.
Where did the new single come from?
“Ruled By You” is a song from my self-titled EP, “MĪLAN”. When I wrote this song I was living in upstate New York in a very isolated setting. My process of writing at this time was very fluid with a “whatever happens” mentality. I would create a track, set up the mic, and let it all out in a way that even I didn’t quite understand.
I’d then sit back, listen and, in a way, interpret what it was my words subconsciously meant. This song revolves around themes of love, desire and addiction. The words and emotion carry a sense of attachment or fixation on an element that the subject just can’t shake but also can’t take any more of. It’s quite a mysterious and haunting tune.
Is there more content in the pipeline?
Always! I have a music video/single being released within the next few months and a few more singles in my back pocket as well.
What’s on the horizon for you?
Big things, big things. I’m hoping to tour at the start of next year (if not sooner), on the east coast to promote my EP and full length LP, which is currently in the works. I’ve made plans for more music videos, more music and a lot more adventure!
