Chatterbox: Lynden chats traveling solo, creating sonic sunsets, and reinvention

Hey Lynden, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Could you tell us a little known fact about yourself?

Hi, my name is Lynden. I’m 25 years old and born and raised in Amsterdam. A little known fact about me is that I’m a jack of all trades, with a lot of talents and interests. I like to be random because life is not supposed to make sense.

What inspired you to write ‘Sunset BLVD’? And what makes this song feel especially personal or autobiographical to you?

What inspired me was definitely a rough moment in my life that I went through—me going through a breakup. We used to travel the world together and see a lot of places, and now I was traveling on my own. The absence of this significant other drove me crazy and reminded me of all the places we went and talked about, how we were supposed to be together forever.

How did your travels, especially your time on Sunset Boulevard, shape the mood and message of the track?

Well, the first thing that really shaped the mood for me was the fact that I wanted people to really be able to visualize Sunset Boulevard when hearing this song. I tried to achieve that effect not by describing the actual surroundings, but by matching its vibe. It has a lot of different parts—busy areas but also very tranquil and romantic spots. High palm trees. I tried to make it just as I remembered it.

You recorded this at home in Amsterdam, so did that contrast of setting also influence the vibe of this song?

Recording the song back home in Amsterdam never really changes the vibe for me on any song because creativity is a limitless force. I like to make use of it to expand my here and now into something greater. That way, I can visualize myself being somewhere else, and vibe to a different energy.

You chose to avoid heavy autotune and used acoustic instruments, why was that important for this track?

I feel like using autotune is like an instrument and not a must. The song doesn’t call for autotune, so I didn’t use it. I also want people to hear the realness of my voice instead of a robotic wobble. I feel like by doing everything acoustic and blending it with warm vocals, it gives that feeling you get when the sunsets.

Your music blends pop, R&B, soul, dance, and even a touch of country. How do you define your sound, if at all?

Defining my sound is hard since I make a lot of different genres. I would say my roots lie in hip-hop and R&B, but ever since I started my journey in making music, I’ve created songs in every genre I can think of. I try to make a blend of music that is new to the world by mixing the genres I enjoy and combining them. That feels natural to me. So, if I were to define my sound, I would say it’s a slice of me, straight from the heart.

What’s next for you?

I’m preparing to release a lot of songs—lots of different sounds as well. I’m looking forward to making music with even more creatives and reinventing myself with every song to keep it enticing and fresh.
